Pop Portraiture

While I devour the work of my favourite street style snappers--namely Garance Dore, Scott Schumann and Tommy Ton--there is an over-saturation of hipster "style" documentation that I find troublesome and horribly formulaic in its contrived irreverence. It's often ugly, ill fitting, slutty and worn while pouting. You're edgy. I. Get. It. But it furrows my brow.

Refusing to post those images here, I wanted to share you two alternative portraits.

This picture is from LookBook, who have just kindly invited me to participate in their amazing online pictorial merry-go-round of worldly style. I love how the subject is self-fashioned in costume, rather than common clothes. He is creating a character, evoking a persona, taking a risk. Plus he is rather pretty, dandyish really. This artfulness elevates the image from just another attention-hungry poser.

Speaking of dandies, here is a film portrait of Rick Owens by the legendary photographer Nick Knight. Mr. Owens has a whiff of dandyism to him that fascinates me--perhaps because it's the topic of my pending paper I need to quit putting off. I love the displaced heady drama, the choppy perspective. Rick is It.

The constant presence of various materials, the multitude of choice, the need to be constantly creating the new. This quest for the best necessitates a uniform. From Donna Karan's bodysuit, Marc Jacobs' man-skirt, Alber Elbaz's bow-tie, Alexander Wang's threadbare t-shirt, and on and on...I want to write more about this. Future article.

Tomorrow is an even bigger day for my Mom. She is debuting her Fall 2009 collection at Toronto Fashion Week. Spent yesterday at the final fittings and run through. It was a fashion pressure cooker. A feverish, frenetic environment of egos and icons. Hence, I loved/hated every minute of it. Barely made it out alive. Must go pull my Lundstrom looks for the week ahead. I always feel better when I'm dressed in my mom's designs. Faithful friends that I love, we shall see you in the tents tomorrow!

I know, I know. I'm a girl--we're programmed to adore Audrey and hail Hepburn. However, today was a very special day. I may be a History of Fine Arts & French Cultural Studies major at a respected university, but this evening I was transported back to the splendid corruption of a middle school science fair. Boy, did I let my inner (or outer, depending on who you ask) Type A teacher's pet FREAK out with this one. My group did a project on Haute Couture's interaction with various mediums of pop culture. This is a topic that I often ponder because I am slightly sick in the head. Hence, I saw it fit to wear a gigantic ribbon bow on my tete, a vintage petite robe noir, Tiffany XOX belt with Chanel flats and blazer to class. For once, my sartorial self-fashioning was relevant to the course syllabus. Lovely. After 3 hours talking shop to anyone who would listen, I am spent. My peers seemed interested in my wisdom, if more than a little afraid. Maybe the part where I claimed Coco whisper's into Karl's ear from the grave was a little much. Perhaps handing out "Fashion Citation" tickets was a tad abrasive. I might have tried to spray a peer with L'Interdit even though she's allergic to perfume. "But it's Audrey's signature scent! " Call me un peu bizarre. Je comprends.

Leopard Skin Pillbox Hat

As the title of one of my favourite Dylan songs, Leopard Skin Pillbox Hat is an homage to the wondrously destructive excess that was Edie Sedgewick. She shares my print preference for exclusively animal and nautical stripes. It has been cold and rainy for the past couple days, thus during a townhousesitting sojourn last weekend, I snatched my mother's leopard trench. We call it "the party coat" because if you wear it out, you immediately become the life of the party. You could be wearing pajamas underneath--no matter--it's still ab fab. Like champagne, it just pops and makes me bubbly. The Isabel Marant show, a sinewy feline affair, brought out my ferocious desire for cheetah. I have since worn this number non-stop. J'adore pairing my leopard print with heather gray. Try it.

My little sister, or ThatLittleThief, as I will now refer to her, changed the name of her blog today. It is now called Stolen From My Sister. She is using the internet to taunt me from the west coast, where the glamoursly filthy grungester lurks. Beware. If you are ever in Vancouver and your clothes/accessories mysteriously go missing, she is the most likely bandit. Her style is pretty ridiculous--quite different from my own--but I love her originality. Example above. While I went ballerina with this banded dress from Lundström, TLT chose a decidedly more bohemian styling. I like that we're different. She is a source of constant inspiration (and tempestuous rage), so thanks TLT. Please find below a picture of her room. I STOLE this picture from her Facebook. This is why we can't live together. Oy. Veh.

I will be doing a Paris and Milan recap once the week is through. I want to let it all sink in. While I can appreciate a lot of the Balmain looks, there were other shows that deserve accolades. Besides, that style is so heavily ripped off...on the wrong soul can look utterly overpricedclubwearchainstore. One to watch: Haider Ackermann.

Michelle Pfeiffer in Scarface. I'm feeling it again. Perhaps because all things 70's are inspiring me maintenant. This portrait of Michelle, Jodie and Meg is also alluring in its simplicity. Love a good Lebovitz. Just saw The Women, and while the original is much more cunning, I really enjoyed the pairing of Ryan and Benning. Annette reminded me so much of a well known Canadian fashion editor. So today I'm tucking my tresses behind my ears and taking my round brush for a whirl in honor of Elvira. Scarface is not just fodder for wannabe womanizing gangsters who thumb-tack the movie's poster to their bachelor pad walls. It is a celluloid fashion moment. Scorsese always incorporates iconic looks into his films...Back to my class discussion on Proustian gender-bending. I wish more people thought this way.

I spent sunday at my mother's atelier making colour boards for Spring 2010.

While sipping our soy honey rooibos tea, we poured over fabrics from toute le monde. One group we felt particularly strong about features an Australian Outback palette of camouflage colours. Think kangaroo, swamp, tortoiseshell, quicksand, and melted gold. Throw in a dash of Indiana Jones, et voilà. It's will be so beautiful and textured. Oh I really should fermer ma bouche--this is top secret information mes amies. I have been feeling this mix in my own wardrobe recently as well. Above are a few neutral pieces that I really ought to wear more. I love mixing the different tones and topping it off with my fur vest. That thing is like Splenda--just can't get enough. Still on the hunt for the perfect green fatique jacket for spring. I want slouchy, but not sloppy. Thinking of just altering a vintage one I already own. Perhaps a sequin embellishment on the lapel like Dries Van Noten did this spring....Back to my paper on depictions of prostitution in realist french art. Mag--expect a urgent email requesting your expertise on the topic.

Bad Luck Charms

I am really sad here. Sitting on the loo tending to my busted knee in Paris this summer. Was I under the influence? Unfortunately, no. Just another victim of purple's evil wrath. I was hesitant to even go here. Just this morning I woke up sick with no water in my building.

I blame purple. Purple?

Speed reading British Vogue, I happened across a section where editors and stylists reveal what brings them bad luck fashion-wise. From leather pants that split up the crotch to a darling Rykiel dress in which your dumped, the message was swarovski crystal clear. Get those cursed items the hell out of your sacred closet. Banish them to your nearest charity shop, sell on ebay, throw out the nearest window, set aflame.

Speaking of windows, I feel out of a one in above offending purple pencil skirt. Thankfully, I timbered onto the patio. I survived to tell this harrowing tale and to teach all the dangers of snug pencil skirts. For the same reason I detest snowboarding, legs should not be oppressed. The next day, I lost my euro cellular and split sauvignon blanc on my blackberry rendering it useless. Then I got sunstroke in a seemingly harmless vintage purple tartan skirt thoughtlessly picked up in Le Marais. Cue les parametiques et une ambulence. Recently I fell UP the stairs at Starbucks, then proceeded to slide DOWN. No one helped me get up. I messaged my dear Mag, photog of above toilette shot. She rightfully questioned my colour palette.

"Mosha, are you wearing purple?"

Zute. An INDIGO sweater. How could I be so careless with my safety?

Please learn from my magenta mistakes. Spring is pending, lovelies. Time to clean house. I did a closet clear-out the other day, which I ship to my Auntie Chrissie out west to sell. Rid

yourself of all those items that have only brought evil, bruises and tears. It could save your life. Hence, offending purple garment was ceremoniously bid adieu. Bon voyage forsaken skirt.

I like this idea a lot.

Only with European or Japanese Vogue though. American Vogue has about 2 riveting covers a year. You could also do this with a striking editorial. Any with the work of Roitfeld, Alt, Lanphear or Nickerson will do.

This photo is from Domino Magazine. I purchased their last issue yesterday. It pains me greatly that they will no longer be in publication--another casualty of the recession. Such a shame. There is nothing else like it on the newsstand. I like Elle Decor, but it's a bit bourgeois for a twenty-something.

However, in times like these, I think it's more important than even to create a creatively inspiring and nurturing home. Domino was all about reflecting your unique style in everything you do. I adore this credo and will miss it dearly.

R.I.P, dear domino.

The mix of art and prints hung salon style and casually propped against the wall is eclectically curated. Mag--I think we could work this look for our apartment in Le Marais.

A lowly hung-chandelier paired with a Gothic bed feel seductively sinister. It evokes a nouveau Dangerous Liaisons ambiance. Perfect for a West Village pad.

This sitting room is equal parts modern and modish. Splashes of robin's egg always invigorate spaces. This is how I would decorate my apartment in Rio.

This is classic Domino. Everything compliments, yet it doesn't feel overwrought. There is something so honest about this room. Like a lovely couple moved in together, a nice balance of masculine and feminine.

Food is a sensual experience, why not make the kitchen sexy? Snakeskin certainly does the trick. My parents townhouse has a well-appointed gunmetal and noir cookery. Makes me feel like a flirty Food Network host whenever I whip up black sesame-crusted wild salmon.

(fun fact of the day: mein is an Icelandic term of endearment. Has no direct translation, but is like darling" Every relative on my Icelandic side uses it. You can to.)

So while I sit in starbucks--writing/studying/planning a trip to peru/finalizing nyc fashion week details/prepping for a designer phone interview--LL is simply strolling my favourite city, taking it all in. One thing at a time. I can't remember the last time I focused solely on something. Quel dommage.

While I rely my ability to multi-task, I yearn for the Paris way of life.

A beret in Paris is a bit Montmartre tourist, I love this look on Claudia. Tweed, quilted leather, patent--the mix of different textures all in black is so Paris.

There is something terribly Parisian about wearing your luxury items with an airy nonchalance.

Jane Birkin is a constant inspiration for this reason. Look how she wears her namesake handbag with a well-worn sensibility. I find this lack of pretension endearing. Consider this: instead of constantly acquiring the new, why not appreciate what you already have and just wear the hell out of it.

My mom always reminds me of this adage. Don't save your nicest things for special occasions. Enjoy them daily. That is true luxury.

Perhaps it is the Gossip Girl residual effect from last night's episode. I felt compelled to wear a bow in my hair today. Juxtapose the sweetness of the bow with messy tresses. Keep everything else boyish for balance. Witness Madame Bardot when she was Mademoiselle complete her outfit with a masculine double breasted jacket.

Tie Me Up

What would we do without scarves? The bigger the better. There was nary a moment in Israel when I was sans scarf. Constant travelling necessitates swathing yourself in cloth.

Just add a scarf et violà-- everything looks better--toute ensemble. When in particularly dismal quarters (a uninspired hotel room in Mexico, my school residence in France) I use them to jazz up the decor.

A good collection runs the gamut from designer to dollar store. Picking up scarves from various locales is a fashionable memento. Today I am wearing a vintage Oleg Cassini orange, navy blue and gold silk scarf. It is a bit prissy country club so I paired it with a cashmere boyfriend cardigan.

Hermès is of course untouchable if we're speaking scarves. I love mine, but for now it is much better suited to my curtains then my neck.

Time for Tea

The first time I heard of the elusive Azzedine Alaïa was in Clueless. Cher Horowitz was mugged while wearing one of his signature designs--a vermillion snug party dress. His designs are immediately recognizable and I love how he toys with primarily two looks--a fitted body-con style and a nipped waist, full-skirted pouf shape.

The disciplined designs are contrasted with A.A.'s rebellious business style. He has no website, only smattering of shops and never shows his collection to the public. A W Magazine editor told over tarte de pomme in Paris that the designer refuses to conform to the conventional fashion schedule--much to the chagrin of the media. Perhaps when you are this genius calendars are below you.

This look is certainly implies so. From the leathery material, the jaunty pockets and the fetish platforms...in the words of Rachel Zoe, "I die."

I wrote in an article last year about the importance of finding your signature silhouette. The shape and cut that serves as your fashion armor and always flatters.

This is mine.

Wardrobe Recolletions

Sometimes the best looks already lurk in your own closet. While I love investing in new pieces, this time of year I like to experiment with old favourites. Call it fashion comfort food.

Here is a shot from a fashion spread I styled this summer. The plaid dress on my sister Sophie and the jacket on my dear Ramy are both H&M. But for his Ernest Sewn jeans and her Holt Renfrew hat, everything else is vintage.

These items tend to become markers of experiences and travel.

The shredded lining of the preparatory blazer are testament to my love of this staple. I picked it up at a charity shop in Gramercy Park when I was studying in New York City. It was the same price as a settee that I upholstered in houndstooth. It elevates everything I pair it with. No coincidence--or perhaps an embarrassment--that when ELLE and FASHION have photographed me I was wearing it.

The belt is vintage Escada. I picture some fabulously eurotrashy lady like Ivana Trump wearing it in the 80's with a power suit. Au contraire, here it susses-up casual tartan. I have such fond memories of a night spent dining atop the Centre Pompidou and frolicking down Rue du Faubourg St. Honoré at 3am gazing at the window displays of legendary designers. I wore this belt with a white bubble mini, black leather jacket and patent booties. Paris demands a cinched waistline.

On one of my mother's biannual trips to the City of Light, she bought me this saucy red snakeskin clutch at the market. It comes from Africa and the skin is so luxuriously scaly. Merci beaucoup, Mama.

I met one of my very best friend's when I was 11 years old in Sweden. We were there for a special international summer camp, each representing our respective nations--me from Canada and she from Brazil. We remained in contact (impressive considering the lack of email at the time) and have visited each other numerous times. I have fallen in love with Brazil. The beaches, the food, the family and a couple boys. Oh, and the shoes. Oh the shoes! There is a mod boutique called Arezzo in a leafy neighborhood where I found these forest green ankle strap heels. Muito chic.

This entry is apologetically long, but that's what happens when one strolls down fashion memory lane...

As I type this, my wrists are decked with bangles, bracelets and red Kabbalah strings acquired during a recent trip to Israel.

Karl Lagerfeld presented his haute couture collection for Chanel in Paris yesterday. The theme was papier and each model's hair was adorned with hand-crafted fleurs. The fragility of the material was beautifully delicate yet hypermodern. The details of each creation are astounding. I once watched a french documentary on the atelier of Chanel. The seamstress are all quirky femmes d'une certain age. Before a collection debut, they work all night long. A small television broadcasts the fashion show so they may watch their blood, sweat and tears promenade down the runway.

There is a blizzard out my window.

Thank god for fashion.

This uptown ensemble is simple and soigné. An elegant mix of black and chestnut worn with the classic Coppola nonchalance. Love how people who were born into privilege do subdued luxury.
